History in the industry and as a WCW member

Darren started working at Sweetgrass FN in 1999 as an Operator in Training.  Since starting he has worked 14 years at the City of North Battleford WTP and the past 2 years as a Circuit Rider for SaskWater.

Typical day

Darren spends 4-5 days a week on the road traveling to the FN that he works with.  He spends 2 days with each client working through issues and training.  When he is with the operator he reviews the logbooks and talks to the operator about any issues that have arisen and follows up on the action items from his last visit.   The operator and trainer perform any immediate maintenance that is required (fixing chemical pumps, repairing/pulling distribution/collection pumps, etc.) and then performs preventative maintenance in the facilities.  Part of the trainer’s duties is to provide coaching in safety procedures and assist operators to perform jobs in a safe manner like confined space.

Job Satisfaction

Darren says he likes everything about his current position.  He says the operators that he works with are great and he likes being able to work independently.  He has been able to work with many of the operators that he has met over the years.

Main challenges

Keeping up with changing technology and knowing several different facilities is a big challenge in Darren’s current role.

Advice

“It takes about 10,000 hours to master a trade so learn your craft and master it.”

Time away from work

Darren loves spending time with children.  He has 2 grandchildren of his own and helps his sister with her 6 children.  His wife is a teacher so he helps with field trips like skiing and teaches land-based training (hunting, fishing, smudging and other traditional practices) for FN schools.  Pooyak has also been at the last eight First Nations Winter and Summer Games as a coach.
