History in the industry and as a WCW member

have been working in the Municipal Government field in the province of Saskatchewan for the past ten years.  My main field has been Managing/Directing Public Works and Operations for various cities and towns.

Typical day

A typical day would start by having the day all planned out, and within a few minutes having to completely abandon that idea and just wing it. Equipment failure, Weather issues, short staffed, Water breaks, other department requests and a call to go collect road kill off a street somewhere.

Job Satisfaction

I enjoy the variety of work that we do everyday, Water distribution, Lift Station operations, water treatment processes, service connections and metering, waste management, airside operations, traffic lights, work zone traffic plans, majority of the public.  Having a great team to stand beside and get the job done.

Main challenges

Some of main challenges facing us, is the loss of our experienced and reliable workers and the loss of knowledge as they retire; finding skilled and experienced workers who are in our various trades.

Career Highlights

Highlights include: being involved with the Communities of Tomorrow program, Service Connection Project and attending the APWA Conference and show in Anaheim, CA.  Being involved in projects such as Estevan Airport, moving the Airport into being a Registered, Certified Aerodrome with scheduled services.  Assiniboia Landfill, moving it into being a Municipal/Industrial permitted landfill with ability to become a Regional operation.  Working on developing a SCADA system to monitor the complete intake to exit of water through the system.  Bringing in place a water metering system to Assiniboia that speeds up reading, billing, and consumer confidence in the system.

Advice

Be a constant learner, Don’t stop asking Why, and then figure it out or ways to improve on it.  Watch and listen, as there are so many people out there who have so much to show and teach. Enjoy the people around you.

Time away from work

In my spare time, I enjoy restoring, building, and racing cars and motorcycles, riding my bicycle in the mountains, hiking in the bush, playing in my shop, and dreaming up different ways to go really fast.
